Pottsville, Pennsylvania

Situated along the west bank of the Schuylkill River and 97 miles north-west of Philadelphia, Pottsville is the only city in and the county seat of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Home to more than 15,500 residents, Pottsville is located in Pennsylvania's Coal Region, named for the abundance of anthracite coal. Popular attractions held annually in Pottsville include the Great Pottsville Cruise held on the second Sunday of August; and The Great American Way Fair held in early May. Also, Pottstown is well-known for being the home of the Yuengling Brewery, America’s oldest brewery, founded initially as the Eagle Brewery in 1829.

Founded in 1806 by John Potts, Pottsville grew rapidly spurred on by industry's need for the area's natural anthracite resources. By 1851, Pottsville was designated as an economic center. Due to its location along the Schuylkill River, Pottsville developed a small textile industry. The Phillips Van Heusen company, founded in 1881, began with Moses Phillips and his wife Endel sewing shirts by hand and selling them from pushcarts to the local coal miners. By the late 1970s, Van Heusen and other textile-related companies left the region primarily because of foreign competition. The Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, the remnants of which were acquired in the late 1900s by the Reading Anthracite Company, acquired coal lands and would become one of the most significant coal companies operating in Pennsylvania until the decline of the anthracite industry after World War II. In recent years, Pottsville has begun revitalizing the downtown area. The city is also working to bring the railroad back as a tourist attraction and is also planning to build a large transportation hub in the same location for bus service throughout the county.
