Phoenixville is a borough in northeast Chester County, Pennsylvania located approximately 28 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Originally called Manavon, Phoenixville was settled in 1732 and incorporated in 1849 and today is a growing community of over 16,000 people. Phoenixville grew, developed and prospered because of its geography, particularly because of its location along the French Creek and the Schuylkill River, and the production of iron and steel. Its Historic District is the largest National Register of Historic Places site in Chester County.

The Phoenix Iron Works (previously named Phoenix Iron Company, Phoenix Iron & Steel Company, and Phoenix Steel Corporation), was a significant manufacturer of iron and related products during the 19th century and early 20th century and a pillar of Phoenixville’s economy. It even gave the town its name. Phoenix Iron Company was a major producer of cannons for the Union Army during the American Civil War; it also produced rails and structural supports for bridges and viaducts around the world. There are Phoenix Columns supporting the Philadelphia water works, the Washington Monument and the Reading Railroad train shed in Philadelphia. Phoenix Iron Works is a core component of the Phoenixville Historic District and was recognized in 2006 as a Historic Landmark.
