Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania

Settled in the late 1700s and incorporated as a borough in 1862, Mount Carmel is in Northumberland County 88 miles northwest of Philadelphia and 71 miles northeast of Harrisburg. Spanning a total area of 448 acres, Mount Carmel is situated in the anthracite coal region of east-central Pennsylvania. The Borough of Mount Carmel was one of the world’s first towns to have its streets illuminated by electricity. Today, Mount Carmel is home to nearly 6,400 residents.

During the 1800s, coal would become a significant industry and pillar of Mount Carmel's economy. During the latter part of 1854 the Philadelphia and Sunbury Railroad was completed from Shamokin to Mount Carmel, which prompted the opening and development of several collieries in the region. During the same year, the Locust Mountain Coal and Iron Company made extensive improvements to their valuable coal lands in the vicinity of Mount Carmel, building breakers for two collieries - the Coal Ridge and Locust Mountain collieries. Mount Carmel also had manufactories of miners' caps, cement blocks, cigars, shirts, stockings, etc., as well as large silk and planing mills, foundry and machine shops, a knitting mill, lumber yards, a packing plant, and wagon works. Today, the Mount Carmel area largely supports light manufacturing in paper and plastics.
