Lansdale, Pennsylvania

Located 28 miles northwest of Philadelphia, Lansdale is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Spanning a total area of 3.1 square miles, Lansdale's population is just over 16,701. One of the borough's early pioneers was Jenkin Jenkins, a Welsh immigrant who claimed a large parcel of land, in what is now Lansdale Borough, as his home. The Jenkins’s Homestead is believed to be the oldest existing structure in Lansdale.

In the mid-1800s, Lansdale became a boom town. By 1856, a junction of the North Penn Railroad was completed where the center of the town is now located. The borough of Lansdale was officially incorporated on August 24, 1872, the small village became a neutral place for railroad workers to settle. Businesses formed to serve both rail workers and passengers. Within a short time, Lansdale had graduated from rail station status to a post office village, and then into a vibrant town and industrial center. Early in the 20th century, its industries included agricultural implement works, a canning factory, foundries, brickyards, a silk mill, and manufacturers of cigars, stoves, shirts, rope, iron drain pipe, and glue. The Franklin Tile Company, established in 1927, was one of Lansdale's more notable company's. Franklin Tile manufactured glazed ceramic tiles and eventually became one of the most advanced ceramic tile companies in the world. Through the years, ownership of the company has changed several times. The Franklin Tile Company operated from 1927 until the early 1950s. From the early 1950s until 1959, the name of the company was American Encaustic Tile Company. Then in 1959, the name of the company was changed to American Olean Tile Company. In December 1995, Dal-Tile International, then the largest U.S. manufacturer of ceramic tile acquired the American Olean Tile Company.
