Indiana, Pennsylvania

Incorporated in 1816, Indiana is a borough in and the county seat of Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Home to nearly 15,000 people, Indiana, and the region as a whole, distinguishes itself as the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World" because the national Christmas Tree Grower's Association was founded there. A large number of Christmas tree farms are still located in the area. A number of properties in Indiana are listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Old Borough Hall, the Old Courthouse, the Old Jail, and Sheriff's Office, the James Mitchell House, the Silas M. Clark House, and the National Guard Armory.

During the 1800s, Indiana prospered as a result of agriculture and timber pursuits. During the first half of the 1900s, the major industry of Indiana was coal mining, but as mines closed in the late 1900s the area experienced ongoing economic difficulty. For decades, Natural gas surveying and production supported the borough’s economy. Indiana was once home to the largest privately owned drilling company in the United States. Today, Indiana’s largest employer is Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a public university founded in 1875 that offers more than 100 undergraduate majors.
