Easton, Pennsylvania

Easton is a city in and the county seat of Northampton County located along the banks at the confluence of Lehigh and Delaware rivers. Together with Allentown and Bethlehem, Easton is one of the primary cities that comprise the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania's third most populous metropolitan area. Easton is the smallest and easternmost city of the Lehigh Valley located within an hour of New York City and Philadelphia. The frontier town was laid out by William Penn in the mid-1700s; its focal point was, and still is, a large central square. Easton is the home of Lafayette College as well as several attractions including Two River's Landing, Crayola FACTORY, National Canal Museum, and the Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument.

Upon completion of the Lehigh Canal in 1829, the lands along the Lehigh River attracted great industrial development. Easton was a major commercial center during the canal and railroad periods of the 19th century, when it was a transportation hub for the steel industry. Three canals served to connect the coal regions to the north and west, the iron works to the west, the commercial port of Philadelphia to the south, and the New York City area to the east via a connection with the Morris Canal across the Delaware River in Phillipsburg, New Jersey which generated capital and investment to Easton. Thus, Easton continued to prosper as a center for industry, manufacturing, commerce, and culture. When canal transportation was largely replaced by railroads, Easton was served by five railroads, and only lost its prominence in transportation with the development of the automobile in the mid-20th century. Today, home to more than 27,000 residents within a region of 540,000, the city of Easton is a full-service working community that maintains industrial areas with light manufacturing, distribution and warehousing.
