Danville, Pennsylvania

Nestled along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River, Danville is a borough in and the county seat of Montour County in northeastern Pennsylvania. Home to nearly 5,000 residents, Danville is part of the Bloomsburg–Berwick Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Enormous coal and iron mines dominated the town for most of the 19th century and the iron industry was the primary employer in the region. Some of the many mills that thrived in Danville throughout the 19th and 20th centuries included Montour Iron Works, Columbia Furnaces (Grove Brothers), and Danville Stove & Manufacturing Co. Eventually, however, several iron mills fell into decline as steel replaced iron in the 20th century. In addition to being a significant iron town, Danville was also a transportation center in the 19th century, served by several railroads and the North Branch of the Susquehanna River. Many of the rails of the nation's expanding railroad system were made in Danville.
