Connellsville, Pennsylvania

Located along the banks of the Youghiogheny River, Connellsville is a city in Fayette County in southwestern Pennsylvania. Originally founded as a borough on March 1, 1806, in February 1909, New Haven and Connellsville unified and became the first city in Fayette County, estimates had the population at more than 22,000. Today, the population has declined to around 9,200 residents.

Early industry in Connellsville was largely based on the needs of the growing population and community. Many diverse industries included chemical products, lumbering, candy, tin plate, locks, automobiles, cotton, woolen and silk mills, aluminum coating, flint glass, breweries and distilleries. The boat building industry had to compete with the railroad for cargoes. At various times during its history, Connellsville was served by the following railroads: Pittsburgh and Connellsville Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio, Pittsburgh & Lake Erie, Western Maryland, Pennsylvania Central, Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Youghiogheny, Norfolk & Western, and Pittsburgh & West Virginia. Coal mining and accompanying industries became the significant source of employment and local revenue during the latter half of the nineteenth century creating a great deal of wealth to the Fayette county region. During the coke and coal days, Connellsville had at one time more millionaires per capita than any other place in the United States. However, when better heating processes were developed, Connellsville's coke was no longer needed and the industry went bust as did the economy of Fayette County. Connellsville is not a capital of industry anymore, nonetheless the city's once great legacy can still be seen in beautiful churches, buildings, and houses.
