Carnegie, Pennsylvania

Located six miles from downtown Pittsburgh, Carnegie is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and is part of the Pittsburgh Metro Area. It was incorporated on March 1, 1894 from the boroughs of Chartiers and Mansfield (separated by Chartiers Creek). Neighborhoods in Carnegie include Rosslyn Heights, Cubbage Hill, Irishtown, Forsythe Hill, Library Hill, and Old Mansfield. Occupying a total area of 1.3 square miles, Carnegie is home to nearly 8,000 people.

The earliest industry, in addition to farming, was the production of whiskey. As the population grew, the chief industry became coal mining. The largest industrial employers in Carnegie were steel mills such as Superior Steel Company & Union Electric Steel. Carnegie had a rail yard that had connections to several railroads early in the twentieth century, including the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal railroad, and the Pennsylvania Railroad. The railroads fueled the industrial expansion of Pittsburgh and the United States. In the 1970s, Carnegie suffered economically with the closure of the steel mills in and around Pittsburgh. Today, more than 400 businesses reside in Carnegie, from sole proprietors to corporate headquarters.
