Carbondale, Pennsylvania
Located approximately 15 miles of Scranton in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the city of Carbondale was incorporated in Luzerne County on March 15, 1851, making it the oldest city in what is now called Lackawanna County, and the fourth oldest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Carbondale was founded during the rise of the anthracite coal mining industry; it was the site of the first underground mine in the United States. Also, it was home to the Delaware & Hudson Gravity Railroad which revolutionized the energy and transportation industry, and became America’s first million dollar corporation. Occupying a total area of 3.2 square miles, "The Pioneer City" is home to nearly 10,000 residents.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Carbondale prospered from the mining and railroading industries making the region a haven for eastern European immigrants seeking work and opportunity. Mining dominated the Carbondale's economy until the early 1950s when light manufacturing became the new economic pillar of the community. However, like other cities and towns in the region, the demise of the coal mining industry had a negative impact on Carbondale's economy and population.
