Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Settled at the confluence of the Lehigh River and Monocacy Creek, Bethlehem is a city in Lehigh and Northampton Counties in eastern Pennsylvania. It is the oldest city in Lehigh Valley. As of the 2010 census, Bethlehem had a total population of nearly 75,000, making it the seventh largest city in Pennsylvania. Bethlehem has six distinct National Historic Districts within its boundaries, as well as two National Historic landmarks. Many of its original structures, built by the early settlers, still line the streets of the downtown historic district. Lehigh University and Moravian College are located in Bethlehem.

The canal, railroads and resulting economic opportunities attracted large-scale industry to the south bank of the Lehigh River. Bethlehem became a center of heavy industry and trade during the industrial revolution. Bethlehem Steel (previously known as Bethlehem Iron Company), founded in 1857, dominated the economy, town and way of life. It was the first to produce the now-ubiquitous "I-beam" used in construction of steel-framed buildings. It manufactured construction materials for numerous New York and other city skyscrapers, as well as major bridges. After nearly 140 years of metal production at its Bethlehem plant, Bethlehem Steel ceased operations in 1995. Recently, the historic Bethlehem Steel plant was redeveloped into a fully integrated resort called the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem.
