Ambridge, Pennsylvania

Ambridge is a borough in Beaver County in southwestern Pennsylvania situated along the east side of the Ohio River, 16 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Incorporated in 1905 and named after the American Bridge Company, Ambridge spans a total area of 1.7 square miles and has a population of more than 7,500 people. Old Economy Village, a National Historic Landmark and the last home of the Harmonists, is located in Ambridge. Old Economy has many preserved Harmonist buildings and a museum dedicated to the Harmonists and their way of life. The buildings reflect the unusual life style of the organization, which, by the 1840s, was well known for its economic success in textile production. The site also portrays the community's early involvement with agricultural production, railroads, and oil.

The community of Ambridge began as a steel town in 1905 and thrived for many years until the steel industry collapse in the early 1980s. The steel mills became the focal point of Ambridge. Eventually the borough would become a worldwide leader in steel production. The borough became known for bridge building, metal molding, and the manufacture of tubes/large iron pipes. The legacy of American Bridge Company can be seen today from coast to coast, from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Some of the other notable steel-related companies who operated in Ambridge at one time or another were Armco, Wykoff, A.M. Byers, H.K. Porter, National Electric, Babcock and Wilcox, H.H. Robertson. Ambridge, now more than 100 years old, is a community determined to come back from an economic slump that began near the end of the 20th century and has embraced the motto “Proud Past, Bright Future”.
