Altoona lies at the base of Brush Mountain within Logan Valley and Pleasant Valley. It is a city in Blair County, Pennsylvania and the principal city of the Altoona metropolitan statistical area. Home to more than 47,000 people, Altoona is the tenth most populous city in Pennsylvania. Altoona is home to the world's oldest wooden roller coaster, as well as to the “Horseshoe Curve”, a famous curved section of track owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad, which has become a tourist attraction and National Historic Landmark.

Altoona was founded as a major railroad town by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1849 and incorporated as a borough in 1854. By 1925, 14,000 of the 17,000 industrial workers in the area were employees of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The rail yards produced locomotives, as well as other rail cars and railroad equipment. Other major industries in Altoona included silk, meat-packing and clothing. As the interstate highway system developed, the era of railroad ended. Having grown around the railroad industry, the city is working to recover from industrial decline and urban decentralization experienced in recent decades.
