04. Asbestos Use in Oklahoma City

Asbestos Use in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Asbestos use was common throughout Oklahoma from the early 1900s through the 1970s. Asbestos is affordable, durable and heat resistant. Because of this, it was popular in commercial, manufacturing and residential applications. Many workers and residents of Oklahoma City were exposed to asbestos at various jobsites or in their homes.

Military bases are among the most common places where asbestos exposure occurred. In Oklahoma City, Tinker Air Force Base (Tinker AFB) was among the largest asbestos jobsites in the area. Some asbestos exposure risks may continue today.

Asbestos Exposure at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Tinker AFB is one of many Air Force bases where dangerous asbestos exposure has occurred. Asbestos materials were used in plane parts such as engines, brake pads and gaskets. This resulted in a risk of exposure for Air Force pilots and aircraft mechanics. Asbestos exposure also occurred in military housing at Tinker AFB.

In January 2020, federal investigators raided the Balfour Beatty Communities office at Tinker AFB. Balfour Beatty is the property manager of the base. The investigators were looking for evidence of asbestos exposure in on-base military housing.

In this case, Balfour Beatty’s contractor used an unlicensed subcontractor for floor replacements. The removal of asbestos-containing vinyl and linoleum flooring violated asbestos rules and safety regulations. Records show this affected 20 homes with asbestos flooring in the McNarney Manor neighborhood. This asbestos exposure event was one of many that occurred at Tinker AFB.

Anyone exposed to asbestos in Oklahoma may have developed mesothelioma. There may be financial compensation available to them.
