Zanesville, Ohio

The city of Zanesville is the county seat of Muskingum County, Ohio. Located at the juncture of the Muskingum and Licking Rivers, the city sports an unusual landmark: the country's only Y-shaped bridge. Zanesville has a current population of about 25,500. Once known for its numerous potteries, Zanesville's top employers today include the health care industry, as well as county and city government. Notable manufacturers include Anchor Glass Container Corporation, the New Bakery Company of Ohio and Burnham Foundry Corporation.

Zanesville was founded in 1797 by Ebenezer Zane, ancestor of Western novelist Zane Grey. Zanesville became the county seat in 1804, and was state capital from 1810-1812. Pottery became one of Zanesville's earliest industries. Raw materials were abundant and could be shaped into shipping containers for farm products as well as household goods. By the mid-19th century, more than three dozen seasonal potteries were in operation. Later in the century, commercial production methods came into use and Zanesville pottery ware found a wider audience. The American Encaustic Tiling Company, at one time the largest manufacturer of glazed art tiles in the world, operated in Zanesville from 1875 until 1935. The Weller Pottery Company opened in 1890 and soon employed hundreds of workers. Zanesville Art Pottery followed in 1900, and was acquired by Weller in 1920. Although Weller ceased production in 1948, Zanesville still has several pottery companies which trace their origins to the art pottery heyday. Zanesville Pottery and China, Inc. began in 1947 as an outlet store for other local potteries, and The Original Hartstone Pottery Company crafts its hand painted dinnerware and baking stones in a brick plant that was built by the J.B. Owens Pottery Company in 1902.
