Worthington, Ohio

Worthington is a city on the Olentangy River in Ohio. Located in Franklin County, Worthington has a population of about 14,000. Worthington was founded in 1803 and became a city in 1956. A promotional booklet from the mid-1960s depicts a typical suburban community, with housing developments, schools, small business and a few cornerstone industries. Today, Worthington retains its residential, small-town character. Top employers include AAA Ohio, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, and metal products manufacturer Worthington Industries.

Worthington grew slowly at first, with the population remaining under 1,000 residents well into the 20th century. The town's first industrial venture was the Worthington Manufacturing Company, established in 1811. The Columbus, Delaware and Marion Railway operated from 1902-1933, making travel between Worthington and Columbus more convenient and facilitating manufacturing growth. In 1902, the Columbus Pottery Company began work on a new pottery factory, which later housed the Brunt Tile and Porcelain Company from 1914-1925. Worthington Foods was founded in 1939 as Special Foods, a health foods manufacturing company. The company expanded during World War II, as meat rationing increased the market for the company's soy- and wheat-based meat substitutes. A line of frozen foods was added in the 1950s. The company was later acquired by Miles Laboratories, and is currently owned by Kellogg Company, which markets its products under the Worthington, Loma Linda and Morningstar Farms labels. Other companies active in the mid-20th century include Antlab, Inc., which made antennas for the space program, and International Research and Development Corporation, a maker of vibration measurement equipment. The Ohio Railway Museum has occupied the properties of the CD&M Electric Company since 1948.

Worthington's history of industry and residential construction make asbestos exposure a continual concern. Workers and their loved ones who have been exposed to asbestos may be at risk for malignant mesothelioma, a cancer affecting the lungs. If you or a loved one were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Worthington, you may also benefit from seeking the advice of a mesothelioma lawyer.
