Wooster, Ohio

Wooster is a city in northeastern Ohio. Located approximately midway between Cleveland and Akron, Wooster is the county seat of Wayne County, and has a population of just over 26,000. Wooster was founded in 1808 and still retains a strong agricultural base, to which it has added a range of industry and advanced materials manufacturing. The College of Wooster, founded in 1866, and two branches of the Ohio State University, contribute to the city's intellectual, cultural, and employment opportunities. Wooster became the seat of Wayne County government in 1811, three years after its founding. The city quickly became a center for agriculture and trade. The co-educational College of Wooster contributed to the town's expansion. Early industries included carriage and buggy whip manufacturing, farm machinery, flour and leather goods. Longevity has been a hallmark of many Wooster companies. The Wooster Rubber Company was founded in 1920, and merged with Rubbermaid in 1934. The company produced Rubbermaid kitchen and household products at its Wooster headquarters until 2003, when the company chose to relocate after the main building sustained heavy damage during a tornado. Akron Brass Company, which had outgrown its original location, moved to Wooster in 1921 and still manufactures fire-fighting equipment at its headquarters there. Other companies of long standing in Wooster include the Wooster Brush Company, established in 1851, Silver Brothers Company, Inc., which has been in the fencing business since 1927, and International Paper Company, whose Wooster box plant has been in operation since the 1940s. In recent years, Wooster has added more service-based businesses, such as ExpenseWire and Quasar Energy Group.
