Wickliffe, Ohio

Wickliffe is a city in Lake County, the smallest county in Ohio. Located near Lake Erie, Wickliffe has a population of just fewer than 13,500. Incorporated as a city in 1951, Wickliffe experienced substantial growth after World War II, as businesses and workers sought more suburban locations. Companies such as Euclid Spring Company and Lubrizol Corporation are still headquartered in Wickliffe.

Wickliffe was officially settled in 1817, and remained a largely rural farming community well into the 20th century. With railroad and interurban light rail service established by the end of the 19th century, Wickliffe attracted a number of millionaire residents, including Great Lakes shipping magnate Harry Coulby, and Frank Rockefeller, brother of Standard Oil executives John D. and William Rockefeller. In 1931, The Lubrizol Corporation moved to a plant in Wickliffe which is now the company headquarters. Steelweld Machinery, an offshoot of Cleveland Crane & Engineering, operated in Wickliffe from 1940 to 1991, when it was acquired by an Illinois firm. The Bailey Meter Company, founded in Boston in 1916, built a new facility in Wickliffe in 1954. In 1963, the Wickliffe plant became the company headquarters, and is currently the U.S. headquarters for ABB Automation. Euclid Spring Company also incorporated in Wickliffe in 1954 and is still active today. Another post-war addition was the Oster Manufacturing Company, which moved to Wickliffe in 1955 and was headquartered there until 1988 when the plant was closed. Newer companies have also made a home in Wickliffe. Precision Castparts Corporation operates its Airfoils division –SMP Plant, producing parts for jet engine turbines.
