Warren, Ohio

The City of Warren is the county seat of Trumbull County, Ohio. Located near the Pennsylvania border in northeastern Ohio, Warren has a population of around 46,000. During the 20th century, the steel and automotive industries dominated the local economy. Although both industries are still represented in Warren, in recent decades retail, dining and service sector businesses have become more prominent.

Warren was founded in 1798 and became the county seat in 1801. By mid-century, the town was a flourishing trade and business center, with numerous shops, several newspapers, a textile mill and two flourmills. By 1890, four railroads intersected Warren, bringing increased business and population. Two local industrialists, brothers William and James Packard, established the Packard Electric Company in 1890. Packard Electric provided electric street lighting for the city, and a subsidiary manufactured the first Packard automobiles. In 1932, Packard Motor Car was acquired by General Motors, which later operated the plant as Delphi Packard Electric Systems, until its closure in 2008. The Trumbull Steel Company built an integrated steel works in 1906, which was later acquired by first Republic Steel, then WCI Steel. Today the facility is operated by Severstal, Inc. Other metal products companies still active in Warren include Thomas Steel Strip Corporation and Charles Manufacturing Company. Food service-related business are also represented in Warren by employers such as Frito-Lay Corporation, AVI Foodsystems, a food service company founded in 1960, and restaurant franchisee Covelli Enterprises.
