Toronto, Ohio

Toronto is a city on the Ohio River in Ohio. With a population of just over 5,600 occupying an area of about two square miles, Toronto is the second-largest city in Jefferson County. Toronto is home to a plant of Titanium Metals Corporation, or Timet, a manufacturer of titanium alloy products founded in 1950.

Toronto was laid out in 1918 with the name of Newburg. Early business establishments included a hotel, mercantile and blacksmith shop. Toronto was fortunate enough to be sited over large deposits of readily accessible clay, which became central to the town's industrial development. As early as 1830, fire clay was being produced, and in 1853, the Carlyle and McFadden pottery began making sewer pipe. The arrival of the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad in 1856 made increased production possible. Toronto was incorporated in 1881 and soon became a center of sewer pipe manufacturing. When the American Sewer Pipe Company was formed in 1900, five of the companies which merged to form the new association were based in Toronto: P. Connor, Great Western Fire Clay Company, John Francy's Sons Company, Toronto Fire Clay Company and Kennedy, Kling & Company. Many of the companies also owned their own clay, slate and coal mines. In 1925, the Ohio Edison Coal Plant began operations. The power plant operated until 1993, and was recently demolished. The Kaul Clay Manufacturing Company, which closed down in 1981, was the scene of a violent labor strike in 1935 which resulted in the death of strike supporter from a clay company in a neighboring town.
