Struthers, Ohio

Struthers is a city on the Mahoning River in Ohio. Founded in 1798, Struthers currently has a population of just over 12,000 residents occupying a 3.7 square-mile area. Steel and iron were the dominant industries in Struthers for most of its existence, although the steel industry has experienced a steep decline since the late 1970s. Smaller specialty companies such as Astro Shapes aluminum extruders, Fast-Cast, Inc. and Argon Steel, Inc. are representative of manufacturing in Struthers today, and a number of the larger steel plants are being considered for environmental remediation and redevelopment.

Struthers was first settled on the Yellow Creek tributary of the Mahoning River by John Struthers. The village's first iron blast furnace was built in 1803, and several more followed. Although these furnaces ceased operations due to the War of 1812, the foundations of Struthers's steel industry were firmly laid. In 1869, the Struthers Iron Company's Anna Furnace began production. Two more mills followed not long after, although the town itself grew slowly until the early 20th century, when the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company established itself in nearby Youngstown, bringing a wave of immigrant workers to the area. Many of the workers employed at the Struthers Works and at several nearby mills lived in Struthers; the Republic Iron & Steel Company constructed a bridge over the Mahoning River in 1911 to encourage its workers to live in Struthers. Struthers formally incorporated as a city in 1920. When Youngstown Sheet & Tube abruptly closed its doors in 1977, putting 5,000 employees out of work, the community quickly responded with redevelopment plans that included the CASTLO Industrial Park, which currently has nearly two dozen manufacturing and industrial tenants.
