Steubenville, Ohio

The city of Steubenville is the county seat of Jefferson County, Ohio. Steubenville is situated on the Ohio River along the Ohio-West Virginia border, and has a current population of nearly 18,700. Known as the City of Murals for its public art program, Steubenville is a former steel and coal town, industries which have experienced economic downturns in recent years. As a result, Steubenville has focused on expanding its healthcare, education and cultural sectors, restoring its historic downtown area as a shopping and dining destination.

Steubenville was founded in 1797 on the site of Fort Steuben. One of the town's founders, Bezaliel Wells, also built Steubenville's first woolen mill in 1815. By the late 1840s, industry in Steubenville had expanded to include five textile mills, two glass works, coal mines and a foundry, enabling Steubenville to incorporate as a city in 1851. The Steubenville Pottery Company, founded in 1879, produced ceramic dinnerware until 1959. Steel production in Steubenville had its origins in the 1870s, when the LaBelle Iron Foundry purchased a nail works in Steubenville, adding blast furnaces and more than a dozen steel mills by the time LaBelle was absorbed into Wheeling Steel Corporation in 1920. A 1968 merger created the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation. The company, including the Steubenville North Plant, was acquired by Severstal in 2008. The Pope Tin Plate company became part of Weirton Steel in 1911. In the 1980s, Weirton Steel employees purchased several mills, including Steubenville, from parent company National Steel, making Weirton the country's largest employee-owned company. Weirton Steel is currently owned by ArcelorMittal.
