Springfield, Ohio
Springfield is a city on the Mad River in the state of Ohio. With a population of roughly 133,000 residents, Springfield is the county seat of Clark County. Farm machinery and publishing once formed the basis of Springfield's manufacturing base. Today, the city's economy also includes information technology, retail and aerospace components, with LexisNexis, Navistar, Inc., Avetec and Qbase among Springfield's notable companies.
Springfield was founded in 1801, and designated the county seat in 1918. Springfield's status as a center of government, and its location at the terminus of the National Road, combined to create early growth. In 1850, Benjamin Warder formed a company to manufacture reaping machines. By 1879, the company had become Warder, Bushnell & Glessner which produced "Champion" brand farm machinery. A merger with four other firms in 1902 resulted in the International Harvester company, at one time the fourth-largest corporation in the country. In 1903, the American Seeding Machine Company was created from another merger of companies which included Superior Drill Company and P.P. Mast & Company. Farm and Fireside Magazine, created by the Mast company to promote their products, became the genesis of the Crowell-Collier Publishing Company, publisher of Collier's Weekly and one of Springfield's top employers before its closure in 1957. Springfield also attracted other vehicular industries, including ten different automobile manufacturers. The Rubber Tire Wheel Company, founded in 1894, became The Kelly-Springfield Tire Company in 1932, the name by which it was known until the 1990s, when Kelly-Springfield was integrated with parent company Goodyear and moved to Akron, Ohio. Although manufacturing has declined in recent decades, Springfield has encouraged the growth of newer industries in its place.
