Sandusky is a city on Lake Erie in the state of Ohio. With a population of approximately 25,600, Sandusky is the county seat of Erie County. Sandusky sits on a protected natural harbor of Lake Erie, a prime location for shipping and industry, including a large coal port. Cowdery Manufacturers, the company had produced specialty chalks for carpenters, tailors and railroads. In 1890, a merger with two other crayon makers resulted in the American Crayon Company. American Crayon was acquired by the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company in 1957, and the Sandusky plant closed in 2002. Papermaking was another key industry for Sandusky. Hinde & Dauch Paper Company, established in 1880 as the Sandusky Paper Company, was the city's largest employer in the 1920s and 1930s. The company was acquired by West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company in 1953, and the 1918 Sandusky plant has been converted to residential use.
