Salem, Ohio

Salem is a city in northeastern Ohio. Located primarily in Columbiana County, Salem also extends into a portion of Mahoning County. Salem's current population is just over 12,000. Salem's economy is a mix of retail, healthcare and nearly 100 manufacturing and industrial businesses. Salem was founded in 1806. Among the early settlers were a group of the Society of Friends, or Quakers, who brought with them values of industriousness and an interest in human rights. Salem was active in the 19th-century abolitionist movement, and held the nation’s second Women's Rights Convention in 1850. The city's proximity to Cleveland and Pittsburgh encouraged manufacturing growth. The Deming Company began making pumps in 1880, and by 1920, they had two factories in Salem. Deming was acquired by Crane Company in 1961. Eljer, Inc. got its start as an iron castings facility in 1908. Despite two major fires and a change of ownership, by 1929 Eljer Company was producing plumbing fixtures and enameled cast iron. Military production enabled Eljer to expand and modernize after World War II, and in 2008, Eljer merged with American Standard Americas and Crane Plumbing to form American Standard Brands. The Salem China Company produced tableware at its Salem factory from 1898 until 1967, and went out of business permanently in 1981. Today, Salem industry includes more high-tech businesses such as Ventra Salem, which manufactures specialty plastic parts for automotive applications.
