Ravenna, Ohio

The City of Ravenna is the county seat of Portage County, Ohio. Located in northeastern Ohio near Akron and Cleveland, Ravenna has a population of approximately 11,700. As with many 19th-century industrial towns, Ravenna today mixes heritage architecture with modern industry, represented by such companies as Enduro Rubber Company, Duracote and Allen Aircraft Products. Robinson Memorial Hospital, founded in 1894 as White Hospital, is now a 285-bed hospital which serves all of Portage County. Ravenna is also home to a campus of Fortis College.

Ravenna was founded in 1799 by Connecticut lawyer Benjamin Tappan. Ravenna became the county seat in 1808. Industry developed early. The Riddle Coach and Hearse Company had its origin in an 1848 buggy company, and the Quaker Oats Company was founded in Ravenna in 1877. During the 20th century, rubber products became a prominent industry in Ravenna. The Oak Rubber Company opened a balloon factory in Ravenna in 1918. The company at one time made nearly 400 varieties of balloons. A superintendent at Oak Rubber, encouraged to patent a rubber tire design for model airplanes, went on to found Trexler Rubber Company, Inc. in 1936. Trexler Rubber today makes a variety of latex and polyurethane products. Other rubber companies in Ravenna have included Kent Rubber Products Company and Pyramid Rubber Company. The Ravenna Arsenal, which began producing ammunition in 1940, also prompted the development of other industries, some of which, like Allen Aircraft Products, are still in operation today.

Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act Takes One Step Closer to Giving EPA Power to Ban Asbestos

“One year ago today, Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), along with three co-sponsors, introduced a bill to update the decades-old federal law that governs toxic chemicals – including asbestos. Just two days ago, that bill jumped over a major hurdle with the passage of an amendment that incorporates a number of changes suggested by the Senate. Now, it returns to the Senate for a final vote before, hopefully, being sent to President Obama to be signed into law.”
