Orrville, Ohio

Orrville is the second-largest city in Wayne County, Ohio. The city occupies a 5.3 square-mile area, with a population of approximately 8,500. Longevity is the hallmark of Orrville's manufacturers, several of which have made Orrville their home for more than a century, including The J. M. Smucker Company, Inc., The Smith Dairy Company, Schantz Organ Company, and The Will-Burt Company, makers of telescoping lighting booms. Orrville is also home to Wayne College, which is affiliated with the University of Akron.

Orrville was founded in 1814 by James Taggart Jr., on land that was granted to him for his Revolutionary War service. A critical development came in 1851, when Judge Smith Orr convinced the Pittsburgh and Fort Wayne Railroad to lay track through the town, and build a water tower into the bargain. Orr and a partner then established a sawmill to provide lumber for the railroad. In 1864, with transportation secured and industry beginning to take root, Orrville incorporated as a city. The first factory to open was a pottery company, in 1862. Several early industries were food-related, including Orrville Cottage Creamery, Orrville Milk Condensery, and the J.M. Smucker Company. The Smith Dairy Company began delivering milk from a wagon in 1909. Today, the company continues to produce milk, ice cream, cottage cheese and other products from their original 1924 production facility. Other companies which have operated in Orrville over the years include Ingersoll-Rand Company, Volvo Heavy Truck and Westinghouse. More recently, manufacturers such as JLG Industries and Scotts fertilizers have joined Orrville's legacy companies, continuing the city's solid manufacturing tradition.
