Oregon, Ohio
Oregon is a city on Lake Erie, in Lucas County, Ohio. A suburb of Toledo, Oregon has a current population of just over 20,200. Once part of the Great Black Swamp, Oregon has been a petroleum-processing center for more than a century. Key employers include Mercy St. Charles Hospital, Sunoco, and BP Oil Company. Other important economic sectors in Oregon include education, construction and retail. Oregon also has an active shipping port.
Oregon was founded in 1838. The swampland provided valuable stands of hardwood, and rich soil for farming, prompting early construction of drainage ditches. During the 19th century, a transportation network of roads, railways and port facilities was built up. Sunoco, Inc., then a part of Diamond Oil Company, purchased its first refinery in 1894. British Petroleum began operating its refinery in 1919. Both refineries are still in operation today, and have long been major employers in Oregon. The northwest side of town developed further as an industrial district, and Oregon voted to incorporate as a city in 1957, with a goal of building a water plant and wastewater treatment facility. The Bay Shore Power Station was built around 1955, and the water plant was built in 1964. A wastewater facility was completed in 1977. Today, in addition to manufacturing, Oregon has expanded its healthcare, education and retail sectors, providing a diverse economic mix.
