Niles, Ohio

Niles is a city on the Mahoning River in Trumbull County, Ohio. Founded by an iron worker, this former industrial city currently has a population of approximately 20,900. Niles today has a diversified economy, with a range of manufacturing represented by companies such as General Electric, Dinesol Plastics, Inc., and Warren Screw Machine. Retail, education, banking and other service industries round out the mix. The National McKinley Birthplace Memorial, built in honor of President William McKinley, houses a library, museum, and historic home.

Originally named Heaton's Furnace, Niles was founded by James Heaton in 1806. Heaton build the town's first forge and blast furnace, laying the foundations for Niles's first major industry. Through the mid-19th century, the iron industry in Niles expanded, and the town grew into a prosperous manufacturing city, home to companies such as Falcon Nail and Iron Company and Niles Firebrick Company. The iron business was supplanted by steel following a depression in 1873, as the cost to modernize existing mills proved exorbitant and newer enterprises took their place. In 1900, the Niles Iron & Steel Company built a sheet mill and added a galvanizing and pickling plant in 1913. General Electric established its Niles Glass Works in 1910 to produce light bulbs. The steel and glass industries were predominant in Niles during the 20th century, despite such setbacks as a 1913 flood and a 1937 steelworker's strike. The general collapse of the steel industry in the 1970s had an adverse effect on the city's economy, which has since focused on developing retail and other revenue sectors.
