New Philadelphia, Ohio

New Philadelphia is a city on the Tuscarawas River in Ohio. The city has a current population of approximately 17,000. The economy is a mix of manufacturing, education, healthcare and service sector industries, with employers such as Gradall Industries, Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, and Kent State University's Tuscarawas Campus. New Philadelphia combines modern industry and amenities with a strong feel of the past. The Tuscarawas County Courthouse, built in 1882, presides over the downtown area, and more than a third of the housing in the city was built before 1939.

New Philadelphia was originally settled in 1722 as a Moravian missionary town named Schoenbrunn, which failed in 1777, due to difficulties connected with the American Revolution. In 1804, John Knisely established New Philadelphia, laying out a street plan and building a gristmill. The town's early economy was focused on agriculture, with the Ohio and Erie Canal providing access to wider markets and power for mills. Late 19th century industries in New Philadelphia included coal and clay mining, and manufacture of bricks, roofing tile, metal goods and carriages. In 1882, Jeremiah Reeves and his brother George founded the Reeves Sheet and Bar Mills. During World War I, with the mills turning out goods for the military, Reeves established the Reeves Coal Company, mining coal to fuel his many factories. The Reeves mills were eventually sold to the American Sheet & Tin Plate Company. In 1950, Warner & Swasey Company purchased the former tin mill for their Gradall Industries division. Gradall currently operates as part of the Alamo Group, manufacturing excavators and crawlers.
