Kent, Ohio
Kent is a city on the Cuyahoga River in Ohio. Home to Kent State University, Kent is a typical college town with a population of nearly 29,000. Kent's manufacturing past is reflected in the historic buildings of the Kent Industrial District, as well as the homes of several prominent 19th-century citizens. Today, education and healthcare are the dominant economic sectors for the city, with Kent State and Robinson Memorial Hospital among the top employers. The Land O'Lakes company operates a butter manufacturing plant, and the Davey Tree Expert Company has had its headquarters in Kent since 1909.
Originally known as Franklin Mills, Kent was settled in 1805. The Cuyahoga River provided power for early gristmills and sawmills, but significant growth came with Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal in the 1840s. In 1851, Marvin Kent founded the Franklin and Warren Railroad Company, which later became part of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company. In recognition of Marvin Kent's role in locating the railroad's shops in Franklin Mills, the city was officially renamed Kent in 1864. Other industries followed, including Seneca Chain Company, Lamson & Sessions, and the Mason Tire and Rubber Company. The Kent State Normal School, which would later become Kent State University, was established in 1910. Kent State was the site of several Vietnam War protests, which culminated in the shooting of four university students. Although manufacturing has declined in the second half of the 20th century, the university has expanded, and has helped to develop research and high-tech industries, such as liquid crystal technology.
