Findlay, Ohio

The City of Findlay is the county seat of Hancock County, Ohio. It is the second largest city in northwestern Ohio, with a population of approximately 39,000. Located about 50 miles south of Toledo, Findlay has a strong economic base, with a mix of manufacturing, professional, retail and educational sectors. Companies headquartered in Findlay include Marathon Petroleum Company and Cooper Tire and Rubber Company. The Whirlpool Corporation maintains a dishwasher factory in the city. Historic buildings and homes grace the downtown area, and the Blanchard River flows through Riverside Park. Findlay is also home to the University of Findlay.

The village of Findlay was laid out in 1821, and incorporated as a city in 1887. During the 1880s, Findlay became a center for oil and natural gas production, and the population quadrupled. Founded in 1887, the Ohio Oil Company moved its headquarters to Findlay in 1905, becoming the Marathon Oil Company in 1962. Marathon Petroleum Corporation became a separate company in 2011, and still occupies a 1929 Art Deco office building on Main Street. The Cooper Tire and Rubber Company moved to Findlay in 1917. During World War II, Cooper switched some of its production lines to war materials, turning out pontoon boats, barges and life jackets and other goods in addition to rubber tires. Today, Cooper Tire is among the ten largest tire companies in the world. The Brilliant City Brewery opened in 1891, later becoming Krantz Brewing Company. Krantz survived through prohibition by producing non-alcoholic beverages such as root beer and ginger ale, resuming beer brewing in 1933. The brewery closed in 1966, although several of the brands, including Old Dutch beer, were continued by other companies until a few years ago.
