Euclid, Ohio

Euclid is a city in Cuyahoga County in northeastern Ohio. Euclid is bordered by Cleveland to the west, and Lake Erie to the North, and has a population of nearly 49,000. Euclid has a strong manufacturing base, with 150 companies including Lincoln Electric Company, H.C. Starck and Euclid Heat Treating Company. Euclid also has attractive residential neighborhoods, parks and beaches.

Euclid Township was established in 1809. Initially a farming community, Euclid's early businesses included a sawmill, gristmill, shipyard and salt works. Euclid saw some early growth, but was quickly surpassed by Cleveland after the Ohio Canal bypassed Euclid for its neighbor in 1827. The Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad arrived in 1850, and Euclid began to develop commercially. Euclid incorporated as a city in 1930, and World War II brought a surge of manufacturing and new residents to the city. Euclid Crane & Hoist Company, founded in 1926, was a major manufacturer of dump trucks by 1953, when it was acquired by General Motors. After several changes of ownership, Euclid, Inc. is now the Ontario-based Hitachi Construction Truck Manufacturing Co. Lincoln Electric, which was founded in 1895, opened a progressive modern plant in Euclid in 1951. Lincoln Electric continues to be a key employer in the city, and recently erected a new wind turbine on site. In 1943, the Cleveland Pneumatic Aerol Company built a plant to produce aircraft landing gear for the war effort. The plant was acquired by Fisher Body Works in 1947, becoming a division of General Motors. The plant closed in 1993, despite supplementing with work from outside customers.
