Dover, Ohio

Dover is a city on the Tuscarawas River in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Occupying an area of less than 5.5 square miles, Dover has a population of just over 12,000. The economy is a mix of small and large businesses, ranging from steel manufacturing to boutique wineries. Prominent employers include medical products maker Zimmer, Inc., metal products company Greer Industries, and General Electric.

Dover was founded in 1806, with plans to make it the county seat. The town grew slowly in its early years, however, and another town was chosen for the honor. In 1825, the Tuscarawas River was connected to the Ohio canal system, and Dover began to grow, incorporating as a town in 1842. During the late 19th and early 20th century, Dover's industrial landscape was dominated by the Jeremiah E. Reeves family. Mr. Reeves and his two brothers founded the Reeves Iron Company in 1883. They sold the business in 1900 to American Sheet and Tin Plate Company. The next year, Reeves's son Samuel founded the Reeves Manufacturing Company, which manufactured metal products until 1999. Other businesses in which the Reeves family was involved include Reeves Banking & Trust Company, Empire Detroit Steel (formerly Reeves Steel), the Reeves Hotel, local radio station WJER, Union Lumber Company, and the New England coal mines. Several of these businesses are still operating in some form today. The Dover Municipal Light & Power Plant, which first came online in 1910, has been expanded and modernized over the years, recently investing in green power generation technologies and fiber optic cables.
