Circleville, Ohio
The city of Circleville, Ohio is the county seat of Pickaway County. Located along the Scioto River, the city has a current population of just fewer than 13,500. Although the layout of the city has changed since its founding, many of Circleville's municipal buildings date from the 19th century, and the brick and masonry structures lend charm to the downtown area. Major employers include General Electric, DuPont and Berger Health System. Local attractions include the annual Circleville Pumpkin Show, which has been held nearly every year since 1903, and A.W. Marion State Park.
Founded in 1810, Circleville is an unusual example of urban planning. Early maps show concentric rings of streets, with radial streets converging on a central octagonal building. Over time, this layout proved unsatisfactory, and by 1856, the Circleville Squaring Company had converted the town to a more conventional grid plan. In the 19th century, access to the Ohio River and the Ohio and Erie Canal helped the city to prosper. Agriculture and related industries such as meatpacking, canning and leather tanning were predominant. Circleville was home to several paper container mills, including the American Straw Board Company, and the Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, formerly the Jefferson-Smurfit Company, which closed in 1998. Other 20th century manufacturing concerns in Circleville have included a General Electric lamp manufacturing plant, a DuPont plant, and a Reynolds Metals plant.
