Barberton, Ohio

Barberton is a city of nearly 28,000 residents in Summit County, Ohio. Located near Akron, Barberton occupies an area of 9.2 square miles, with Lake Anna, a glacial kettle lake, at its center. Planned as an industrial town, Barberton has become more suburbanized in recent years. Barberton's recent centennial has renewed interest in historical preservation and a number of downtown buildings are being renovated. The city offers a variety of recreational resources including fourteen parks, sports leagues, and an arts and crafts festival.

Barberton was founded in 1891 by industrialist O.C. Barber. Envisioning a planned community with a balance of industry, commerce and residential neighborhoods, Barber, along with three associates, purchased 550 acres of land west of the Tuscarawas River. Barber, who at the time was president of the Diamond Match Company and the American Strawboard Company, quickly broke ground for a new enterprise, the National Sewer Pipe Company. Other Barber businesses followed, including a boiler company and an ammunition factory. In 1894, Barber moved the Diamond Match factory to Barberton, and was soon employing more than 2000 men and women. The population grew so quickly that the town earned the nickname "the Magic City", since it seemed to have sprung up as if by magic. In 1906, Babcock & Wilcox purchased Barber's Stirling Boiler Company, and currently operates a research center in the city. By 1920, Barberton was home to some of the largest manufacturing concerns in the world. Although many of the city's businesses remained stable through the Depression, wage stagnation led to labor disputes. The post-World War II years brought new arrivals such as Rockwell International in 1951. In recent decades, manufacturing decline and urban renewal have led to a more professional and commuter-oriented workforce.
