Formerly known as Uniontown, Ashland was established in 1815. The name was changed in 1846 to avoid confusion with another Uniontown in Ohio. Farming was the chief occupation in Ashland in the early 19th century. Major crops included wheat, and apples produced from orchard stock grown by John Chapman, popularly known as "Johnny Appleseed," who spent the early decades of the 1800s in Ohio and established numerous tree nurseries in Ashland County. In the late 19th century, Ashland's population grew steadily, attracting manufacturing concerns, many of which catered to local agricultural needs. F.E. Meyers & Brothers was established in 1885 as a pump and hay tool manufacturer. Today, the company is owned by Pentair, Inc., and is still active in Ashland. In 1907, the Faultless Rubber Company established a plant in Ashland to manufacture pharmaceutical-grade rubber and plastic supplies. Faultless was acquired by Abbott Laboratories in 1966, which operated the plant until it closed in 2007. Current Ashland employers include Chandler Systems, Inc., Reineke Company, Inc., and Samaritan Regional Health System.
