Minot, North Dakota

Located on the Drift Prairie of north central North Dakota, the city of Minot is the fourth largest city in the state and serves as county seat of Ward County. Minot was founded in 1886 during the construction of the Great Northern Railway through North Dakota. The railway’s crews camped here for the winter and overnight, a town sprung up. Minot is called “Magic City” due to the surge in population in a short period of time. On June 28, 1887, Minot became an official incorporated city.

In the early 20th century, the majority of Minot’s land was wide open and unclaimed. After the construction of the Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Sault Ste. Marie railroads, settlers flocked to the area. When Prohibition arrived in the 1920s, the city was nicknamed “Little Chicago” because of its role as supply hub for Al Capone’s liquor smuggling operations. The 1950s brought significant federal funding to Minot; the Garrison Dam and Minot Air Force Base were constructed during this era. Minot Air Force Base is home to the 5th Bomb Wing and 91st Missile Wing, both of the Air Force Global Strike Command. Currently, Minot’s largest employers are Minot Air Force Base and ING Minot Service Center.
