Mandan, North Dakota
Located across the Missouri River from Bismarck, the city of Mandan is the county seat of Morton County, North Dakota and has a population of approximately 18,000 people. In 1881, Mandan was founded as the center for western expansion of the iron trail, and by 1883, a railroad bridge spanning the Missouri River linked the east and west.
The city’s slogan, “Where the West Begins” fully embodies Mandan’s rich heritage. Mandan first existed as a village for the Mandan tribe, then became a cavalry fort, and finally, transformed into a railroad town and hub for area ranchers and farmers. The construction of the Northern Pacific rail lines brought growth to the area in the early 20th century by providing barley, sugar beet, and red potato farmers with a means of transportation for their goods. Mandan’s prosperity considerably increased in 1951 when oil was discovered. Standard Oil announced plans to build a refinery, and after the construction of a crude oil pipeline, the refinery began producing 30,000 barrels of oil per day. The refinery’s current owner, Tesoro Refining and Marketing, boasts a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day. Other companies attracted to Mandan’s oil resources over the years include BP Amoco North Dakota, American Oil Refinery, and Mandan Oil. Today, Mandan is a growing city, and along with Bismarck, serves as a regional retail and trade center for North Dakota.
