Wilson, North Carolina

Located in the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina, Wilson is the seventeenth largest city in the state and serves as county seat of Wilson County. The city was named after Louis Dicken Wilson, a North Carolina politician and general in the U.S. Army. English settlers arrived in the mid 18th century and established an agricultural community before Wilson was formally incorporated in 1849 as a farm market.

The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century connected Wilson to the port of Wilmington and the cultural center of Richmond. The city prospered as a trading center at the heart of the railroad line, and the community’s tobacco and cotton crops supported local economy. By the early 20th century, Wilson’s Export Leaf Tobacco Company had become a leader in the bright leaf tobacco market. Shortly thereafter, Farmers Cotton Oil Company and Wilson Ice and Fuel Company opened their doors and diversified Wilson’s economy. Farmers Cotton Oil Company manufactured various products including high-grade fertilizer, cotton linters, cotton seed hulls, and cotton seed oil. Today, Wilson’s community continues to experience growth and attracts new residents to the city. Since 1990, Wilson has added more than 40 percent to its population. As of 2009, Wilson was home to over 50,000 people.
