Rocky Mount, North Carolina
Rocky Mount is a city in Edgecombe and Nash counties in the coastal plains of North Carolina and has a population of 58,000 people. The city name is derived from the rocky mound at the falls of the Tar River, which went on to become the site of one of North Carolina’s first cotton mills. Although Rocky Mount was initially settled in the early 19th century, it was not until February 28, 1867 when the city was formally incorporated.
The city of Rocky Mount experienced its first growth spurt after the establishment of the Raleigh-Tarboro stage route (presently highways 95 and 64) just south of the city. Following the advent of the railroad, this site became the logical debarking point for any railroad travelers wishing to travel east or west. Rocky Mount’s tobacco crops became the base of local economy and by the turn of the 20th century, Rocky Mount Mills and the area’s productive farmland were major contributors to town prosperity. Business became further developed and companies such as Texfi Blends, W.B. Lea Tobacco Company, and Phoenix Fibers, Inc. operated facilities in Rocky Mount. Texfi Blends (also called Texfi Industries Inc), manufactures and markets flame-retardant polyester, rayon, and wool which are sold worldwide to the apparel, uniform, home furnishings, and export markets.
