Situated on the western bank of the Catawba River, Mount Holly is a small city in Gaston County, North Carolina with a population of approximately 10,000. Mount Holly was established in the mid 18th century when land grants were issued to James Kuykendall of Holland in the locale known as Dutchman’s Creek. In 1875, the town’s name was changed to Mount Holly and on March 11, 1879 the community became an official incorporated city.
Once the Carolina Central Railway reached Mount Holly, the city’s industry began to grow. In 1879, A.P. and D.E. Rhyne and Ambrose Costner established Mount Holly Cotton Mill, the fourth mill built in Gaston County. The mill’s success and prosperity led to the founding of other local mills including Woodlawn Mill and Leaksville Woolen Mills. In the 1950s, Riverbend Steam Plant, a 466 megawatt coal-fired generating station was established. Riverbend is presently owned and operated by Duke Energy Corp and may close by 2015 due to increased environmental regulations. Today, Mount Holly continues to act as a home base for textile companies; the city is home to nineteen manufacturing firms including American and Elfird Mills Inc., the world’s second-largest thread maker. Largest employers currently located in Mount Holly are Wells Fargo, Duke Energy Corp, and Daimler Trucks North America.
