High Point, North Carolina
Located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, High Point is the only city in North Carolina to exist within four counties: Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, and Randolph. The city received its name based on its location at the “highest point” of the North Carolina Railroad where it intersected with the Great Western Plank Road. Settled prior to 1750, High Point became an official incorporated city in 1859.
High Point’s central location and access to transportation allowed cotton, lumber, and other processed goods to be delivered in and out of the city. This contributed to early growth and before long High Point became a manufacturing center composed of tobacco, woodworking, and textile production. The first of many furniture companies opened at the start of the 20th century, leading to the establishment of other organizations including Globe Parlor Furniture Company, Heritage Furniture Company, and Tomlinson Chair Manufacturing Company. Once synonymous with the textile and furniture industry, High Point’s current economy has undergone diversification into industries such as distribution and logistics, customer service, and banking. Largest employers in High Point are Bank of America, High Point Regional Health System, Thomas Built Buses, and Tyco Electronics.
