Gastonia was incorporated as a town on January 26, 1877.
Gastonia’s early growth was reliant on the success of small farms cultivated by local families but by the turn of the 20th century, the Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherford Railroad reached the city and an industrial era was launched. Gastonia Cotton Manufacturing Company, the city’s first cotton mill, was established. The plant shipped cotton yarn north to textile factories and weave mills located there. Gastonia Cotton Manufacturing Company was a success and the community’s cotton industry expanded. At one point there were 12,000 spindles and 140 looms in operation, tended by 300 local workers. Mills that operated in Gastonia over the years include Arlington Cotton Mills, Gray Manufacturing Company, Firestone Textiles, Inc., Modena Cotton Mills, and Parkdale Mills.
