Concord, North Carolina

Concord is the twelfth largest city in North Carolina and can be found near the center of Cabarrus County, approximately 20 miles northeast of Charlotte. Incorporated in 1806, Concord is an old town by United States standards; markers identifying the original town limits can be seen in present-day downtown. Concord is known to house several motorsport teams including Hendrick Motorsports, Roush Fenway Racing, and Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.

Concord's piedmont region characterized by rolling hills and forest appealed to settlers early on. The city was founded in 1796 and experienced a large population growth in 1799 when the Reed Gold Mine was established. What became known as the North Carolina gold rush declined by the 1850s and Concord became a textile center, producing a wide variety of cotton goods and hosiery. In the early 20th century, the Cannon Mills Company manufactured the first towel produced in the south and consequently gained a strong foothold in the local textile industry. This led to the formation of dozen of Concord mills including Cabarrus Cotton Mills, Brown Manufacturing Company, and Gibson Manufacturing Company. Although the textile industry has shifted out of the Concord community, the city currently has a diverse modern-day economy consisting of shipping and transportation, banking, motorsports, and service sectors.
