Yonkers, New York

Yonkers is a city in New York State. Sharing a border with The Bronx, it is the fourth most populous city in the state, with a current population of about 200,000. Once the birthplace of many industrial innovations, Yonkers has developed into a more residential area attracting New York workers that were drawn to the vintage charm of its neighborhoods, shopping centers and recreational and cultural offerings. Notable attractions include the Hudson River Museum, which features works of the Hudson River School of painters, as well as a planetarium, and the Yonkers Raceway, which has offered harness racing events since 1899. A major revitalization project is currently underway which includes a planned minor league baseball stadium.

Settled in the 1640s, Yonkers was primarily a farming town, although the nearby Hudson and Nepperhan Rivers made trade and small industry possible quite early, including one of the first saw mills in the New World. The 19th century saw a boom in industrial activity, in part due to rail travel beginning in 1848. In 1853, Elisha Otis established the Otis Elevator Company to produce his newly designed safety elevator. Otis closed its Yonkers factory in 1983, but the company remains the world's largest manufacturer of elevators and escalators.  Other companies benefitting from their founder’s innovations included Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company (est. 1865) and the Waring Hat Manufacturing Company (est.1849), at one time among the world's largest producers of carpet and hats, respectively. In 1909, Leo Baekeland invented the synthetic plastic "Bakelite". Though war production sustained some of Yonkers' industry through the mid-20th century, price competition forced many of the factories to relocate or close for good. Recently there has been some resurgence of manufacturing, including a Kawasaki railroad car plant which occupies the old Otis Elevator works.
