White Plains, New York

White Plains, incorporated in 1916, is a city in Westchester County, New York. With a resident population of around 57,000, White Plains is convenient to New York City and southwestern Connecticut and is served by two railroad stations, a nearby airport, highways and buses. European settlement in White Plains began in 1683, with the arrival of a group of Puritans from Connecticut. Through much of its first century, White Plains was a rural, agricultural area. In 1758, it became the seat of Westchester County, and began to develop as a business and financial center. An extension of the Harlem Railroad in 1846 brought an increase in population, and by 1886, White Plains boasted three fire companies, a local gas company, and four hotels. Photographs of the period detail the numerous handsome Victorian houses built by prominent residents. One of these, Mapleton, was built in 1867 by a prosperous carriage manufacturer. It was used as convent from 1894-1925, and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. In the early 20th century, a number of New York City-based department stores, such as Macy's and B. Altman & Company, established branches in White Plains, which quickly became a suburban shopping destination. Periods of economic downturn have caused vacancies and consolidation of businesses, but White Plains has remained a retail center, establishing malls such as the Galleria, and in recent years adding telecommunications, technology and financial services businesses to the mix.
