Poughkeepsie is a city in the Hudson River Valley of New York State. Located between New York City and Albany, this city of nearly 30,000 is the county seat for Dutchess County. The city and the town of Poughkeepsie, though distinct municipalities, are generally regarded as a single community. Poughkeepsie is home to Vassar College. Poughkeepsie was founded in 1687, and incorporated as a village in 1799. Paper mills, breweries and other factories sprang up along the river, and New York's wealthy built elegant summer mansions to take advantage of Poughkeepsie's scenic landscapes. In 1852, James Smith began marketing homemade cough drops. In 1866, his sons took over the business, which manufactured Smith Brothers Cough Drops in Poughkeepsie until 1972. Other prominent manufacturers include Adriance Platt and Company, makers of mowing machines, and U.S. Hoffman Machinery Corporation, makers of pressing equipment for drycleaners. IBM built its main plant in Poughkeepsie in 1948, adding additional buildings in 1952. Today the plant houses both manufacturing and research and development facilities.
