Plattsburgh, New York
The City of Plattsburgh, New York, is located on the western side of Lake Champlain, where it joins the Saranac River and is surrounded by the town of Plattsburgh. The city proper has a population of nearly 20,000 residents. The site of a former Air Force Base, Plattsburgh today relies on a mix of manufacturing and tourism for its economic base. Industry is represented by well-established companies such as Georgia-Pacific, and more recent additions such as rail car manufacturer Bombardier. Plattsburgh is also home to a branch of the State University of New York, founded as the Plattsburgh Normal School in 1889.
Plattsburgh is named for its founder, Zephaniah Platt, who settled in the area in 1785. Early industry centered on the fur trade, and the various mills needed to develop a town - sawmills, grist and fulling mills, and others. During the 19th century, Plattsburgh had sufficient industry to establish itself as a village in 1815. A series of devastating fires caused setbacks, particularly an 1849 fire which leveled the entire business district, including the public library. A similar fire in 1867 again destroyed most of Plattsburgh's shops and factories. The 20th century was more promising, as the Plattsburgh Army Barracks was converted to a Strategic Air Command bomber base in the 1950s. The base, which closed down in 1995, also included 12 Atlas missile silos, and a runway large enough to serve as an alternate landing site for the space shuttle. Georgia-Pacific Corporation acquired the former Vanity Fair Paper Mills in 1963. Today the base has been repurposed for commercial airlines and industrial uses. Thanks to a strong Canadian dollar, tourism also increased during the 1980s, prompting the construction of Champlain Centre North mall and other retailers.
