Oswego, New York

Oswego is a city on southern Lake Ontario in New York State. Incorporated as a city in 1848, Oswego currently has an estimated population of around 17,700. Oswego's rich history is reflected in its many historic buildings, including the Oswego Armory, Oswego Public Library, and the Richardson Bates House. The John D. Murray Firefighters Museum and the Safe Haven Museum preserve and honor important aspects of Oswego's past. Fort Ontario, a Revolutionary War-era fortification, has been restored and is maintained as a living history museum.

With the end of British occupation following the War of 1812, and the opening of the Oswego Canal link to the Erie Canal in 1829, the town began to develop into a mercantile and transportation center, with a working port and several active railway lines. The Oswego Starch Company was formed to produce cornstarch in 1848, and was absorbed by the National Starch Company in 1900. An 1866 business directory suggests the variety of trades practiced in the city, listing lumber yards, carriage and harness makers, a box factory, ornamental iron works, milliners, no fewer than 7 shoemakers, even an interior decorator and a practicing clairvoyant. Other manufacturers operating in turn-of-the-century Oswego include the Kingsford Foundry and Machine Works and Oswego Shade Cloth Company. The Oswego State Teachers College was founded in 1861 and has been part of the State University of New York system since 1948. Like many northern cities, Oswego has experienced a decline in industry in the 20th century, with retail, restaurant, education and service jobs becoming more important to the local economy. Tourism has also been a focus, with events such as the Great Pumpkin Festival and Harborfest helping to draw visitors to the city.
